Amalia Spinardi found the perfect audience and the right moment for launching her swim line, Jo de Mer, on the West Coast. On the Thursday before the July 4th holiday weekend, the Brazilian designer greeted Shiva Rose, Jennifer Meyer Maguire, Barbara Constantin and Kathy Rose among a coterie of lithe Angelenos for a luncheon hosted by Alexandra von Furstenberg in the courtyard of Beverly Hills’ Il Cielo.
Possessing 30 pieces and counting from Jo de Mer, von Furstenberg said she buys no other swim brand. In fact, the “It” girl-turned-furniture designer once donned a Jo de Mer bikini under a fur coat, Bond girl-style, for a costume party. Jacqui Getty, who’s planning to escape the Hollywood Hills and paddleboard all summer in Malibu, soaked up Spinardi’s prediction that one-pieces will be all the rage next year for women who are loath to sunbathe.
Other guests had big plans for the summer, whether it involved a swimsuit or not. Eva Amurri is filming “I Hate You, Dad,” a comedy with Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, in which she portrays Sandler’s teacher. When she’s not taking care of her six-month-old son, Ali Larter is putting together a book on how to host dinner parties with photos of all the shindigs she’s held over the past decade.
“I love the random dinner party at 5 p.m. on Tuesday,” she said. “You have to make it up as you go along. I get off on the spontaneous energy.”
Spinardi grooved off the energy from her guests. As she regaled them with stories of how Brazilian women pack two bikinis for each day they’re on vacation, she made sure that her six-year-old brand could offer something for everyone, including stylist Jessica Paster, who confessed that she never wears bikinis.
“They look pretty,” Paster said before using her sharp fashion instincts to declare her favorite. “I’ll wear the caftan,” she told her giggling girlfriends.
