In a letter to the Free Burma Coalition, Phillips Van Heusen explained that a licensee of the previous holder of the rights to the Van Heusen name in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand had produced goods in the country also known as Myanmar before the New York-based company bought back the rights to use its name in those markets and took over that business. Phillips Van Heusen on its own adopted a policy of not producing in Burma over 15 years ago and continues to not do business there. That policy was unclear in a story on page 29, Feb. 19.
