DALLAS — Victor Costa Inc. is producing a group of 10 evening suits for J.C. Penney Co. that the chain will test in about 50 stores during the holiday selling season, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Bearing a new label, Victor Costa Romantica, the suits wholesale for an average of $100, putting them at the top end of Penney’s eveningwear pricing. Costa, which specializes in producing better to bridge-price versions of couture and ready-to-wear designs from Europe, reportedly will ship Penney’s 300 units of each style.

Jim Hailey, president of the women’s division at Penney’s, declined to comment on the report. Victor Costa, president and designer of the Costa firm, did not return phone calls.

Penney’s has said previously it is working on building its underdeveloped eveningwear business.
