PARIS — “You can’t do anything fixed. They must float and be feminine,” says Gianfranco Ferre about his latest couture and ready-to-wear fur collections for Christian Dior.
And they do just that: glamorous faille trenchcoats with opulent mink collars; luscious cashmere ponchos edged in wild mink, or flared jackets in golden zibeline.
The spirit is youthful, modern and highlights the quality of the skins themselves.
“I did not want to cut the fur up into little strips. I wanted to use full skins as much as possible to emphasize their beauty,” notes Ferre.
One of the designer’s cleverest tricks is putting microfiber trenches over mink coats, giving a more relaxed yet luxurious look.
He also uses chasubles with longer coats to evoke imperial Russia.
Dior’s rtw prices are competitive, ranging from $1,300 at retail for a faille trench with wild mink collar to $3,000 for a poncho in khaki cashmere edged with red fox. The prices for the Fourrures Exclusives couture collection start at $4,640 for a short silk coat with Danish mink cuffs and collar to $43,200 for a flared jacket in golden zibeline.
