NEW YORK — Byron “Bud” Bergren has been appointed president and chief executive of The Elder-Beerman Stores Corp.

Bergren, who starts Feb. 11, succeeds Steven Mason, who, as reported, was named interim president of the 66-unit Dayton, Ohio-based department store chain earlier this month. Bergren will report to Mason, who continues as non-executive chairman of the board.

A veteran of Federated Department Stores’ Burdines unit, Bergren had been with Belk Inc. since 1985 and has supervised the company’s 46-unit southern division as either president or chairman for the past 10 years. He has also served as Belk’s corporate senior vice president of sales promotion and marketing and as senior vice president of the Charlotte division.
