ITALIAN IDYLL: Trust Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to start a trend on their vacation. After the fashion duo set up their holiday villa on the rugged Italian island of Stromboli — with its backdrop of a smoldering volcano — this summer, other celebrities have also been seduced by the island’s charms. Recently seen walking Stromboli’s pedestrian-only streets lined with bougainvillea and lemon trees have been couples-of-the-moment Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, as well as Robert De Niro, Sting and Bruce Springsteen.
Sure, the stars are ferried back to their gleaming yachts anchored in the Mediterranean in the evenings, but by day, Pitt and Jolie were content to stroll the black lava rock beaches hand-in-hand, stopping to buy a sarong and a volcano-painted T-shirt at a local store, while Cruise, Sting and De Niro got an up-close look at the volcano’s erupting crater.
After sunning herself on the deck of her yacht off Stromboli’s neighboring island Lipari, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony went ashore to try some of the area’s local cuisine at restaurant Pulera — including pasta with capers.
DONATELLA DOES LONDON: Donatella Versace will sweep into town during London Fashion Week next month to open her newly refurbished store at 183 Sloane Street. Versace plans to host a cocktail party on Sept. 19, followed by a dinner for friends and press, a spokesman for the designer said. She plans to stay in town for a few days, he added, and may even attend some runway shows.
