LANG TALK: Could Cloak’s Alexandre Plokhov be designing Helmut Lang in the near future? Market sources say the New York men’s wear designer is in talks to take over the creative helm at Helmut Lang. Just what that means, though, is unclear. Sources close to Prada reiterated the label is still in deep freeze and that they were unaware of any talks with Plokhov. But Prada is said to be keen to sell the business after its disposal of Jil Sander, and it could be that Plokhov is in talks with a potential bidder eager to get a designer on board if a deal goes through. A report on Plokhov’s potential gig at Lang was first posted on Jane magazine’s Web site,, on Wednesday. (Jane, like WWD, is owned by Condé Nast Publications.) Prada and a Plokhov spokesman declined to comment Wednesday.

PARTY MOOD: The Council of Fashion Designers of America is choosing a new way to make known the nominees and special honorees of the 2006 CFDA Fashion Awards. Chartreuse invitations, each adorned with a Swarovski crystal, have arrived in offices across town for a party cohosted by Nadja Swarovski and the CFDA board to announce the nominees. The party will be held at the Rooftop Gardens at Rockefeller Center, and so far, the CFDA has tapped Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Joseph Abboud to make the announcements. Today is also the deadline for nominee ballots. The awards are set for June 5 at the New York Public Library.

HEAVY METAL: Karl Lagerfeld may have put aside his silver rings in favor of fingerless gloves, but he still has a penchant for hardware. To wit: The designer, who famously lensed the most recent Dom Perignon ad campaign, just designed a limited-edition bottle with golden studs that mimic the bubbly’s bubbles. Sold in a padlocked case, and signed by Lagerfeld himself, the 1998 vintage sells for 1,500 euros, or about $1,800.

BADGLEY GIRLS: Elle magazine, Mark Badgley and James Mischka managed to lure Carrie Underwood, Petra Nemcova, Richie Rich and Joan Lunden to fete the designers’ new ads with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, but where in the world were the twins themselves? Badgley gave their no-show a plausible explanation. “They’re on spring break, if you can remember what that is,” he quipped. But do billionaires really need to go to class anyway?
