SHARAPOVA STRIDES IN: The U.S. Open matches don’t start until Aug. 29, but tennis champ Maria Sharapova is hitting the city next week on behalf of some of her sponsors.
On Monday, the 18-year-old wunderkind will meet and greet teen girls and showcase her U.S. Open apparel and footwear at Town Tennis Club at an event sponsored by Nike, while on Tuesday she will join Tag Heuer to launch the Formula 1 Diamonds watch at Fortunoff on Fifth Avenue. Hopefully, Sharapova is still finding time to practice among all her sponsor activities. She failed to win Wimbledon this year after taking the title in 2004, and has yet to win a Grand Slam event this year. Nonetheless, she is now seeded at number two and is expected to move up to number one when the WTA rankings are released next week.
