NEW YORK — Federated Department Stores officials confirmed Wednesday for the first time that the company is exploring the possibility of acquiring Marshall Field’s from Target Corp. Meanwhile, the ready-to-wear team at the company’s Macy’s East division based here was reorganized.
Federated had an analysts’ meeting in Boston Wednesday, where the question about Field’s emerged. Federated attorneys felt later the company would be required to issue a statement to comply with the government’s full disclosure requirements under Regulation FD.
Target last month said that it planned to review alternatives for its 62-unit Field’s division, as well as its Mervyn’s division. May Department Stores is also reportedly considering an offer for Field’s.
Meanwhile, at Macy’s East, Nancy Feldman was named executive vice president and general merchandise manager for designer, better, moderate sportswear and special sizes, and Robert Smith of Macy’s West will join Macy’s East as executive vice president and gmm of juniors, dresses, coats, intimate apparel and children’s.
They take over responsibilities previously held by Robert Jezowski, who recently resigned as executive vice president and gmm.
Macy’s East operates with two other merchandise executive vice presidents and gmm’s: Kevin Morrissey, men’s and young men’s, and Richard Arnstein, center core, which is handbags, accessories, shoes and cosmetics.
Executive vice presidents report to Ron Klein, Macy’s East chairman and chief executive.
The other Macy’s East executive vice presidents are Martine Reardon, marketing; Mitchell Leventhal, chief financial officer; Larry Anderson, planning/merchandise information office; Bill Herbst, visual merchandising and store design; Randy Scalise, director of stores, and Art Matura, operations, including logistics and security.
Mary Markman is executive vice president and gmm of the home store, though Federated is centralizing its home store operations across the divisions, as reported.
Feldman, who joins the executive committee, was senior vice president of women’s shoes, handbags, accessories and hosiery. Her team includes Louis Mastrogiacomo, senior vice president and divisional merchandise manager of designer and better sportswear, and two vice presidents and dmm’s, Janet David for moderate sportswear and James Ferree, special sizes.
