PARIS — Just two years after totally revamping its designer sportswear floor, department store Galeries Lafayette is already freshening up.

The Boulevard Haussmann behemoth will this summer add in-store shops from Junya Watanabe, Martine Sitbon and Jean Paul Knott. Other vendors, including John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Chloe, Comme des Garcons, Christian Lacroix and Jean-Claude Jitrois will also unveil new or enlarged concepts.

The changes come as competition further intensifies between department stores here. Le Bon Marche, owned by luxury giant LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, has recently undergone a massive revamp, and LVMH is overhauling its recently acquired Right Bank unit, La Samaritaine. Meanwhile, Printemps, next door to Galeries Lafayette on the Boulevard Haussmann, recently unveiled a luxury floor and overhauled its men’s wear location.

At Galeries, buyer Sylvie Choux is also overseeing a major makeover of its men’s area, axing such brands as Calvin Klein, DKNY, Girbaud, Kenzo and Jose Levy and replacing them with the likes of Dior Homme, Martine Sitbon, Comme des Garcons, Dunhill and Valentino.

Galeries will open new-look men’s and women’s stores in September, Choux noted. Also coming next year is a new home store across the street in a space Galeries bought from Marks & Spencer.
