NEW YORK — The High School of Fashion Industries here honored Mark Mendelson, chief merchandising officer of Jones Apparel Group, at its 80th anniversary gala last Wednesday.

Over the years, Mendelson has been a key leader in the school’s growth. In 1989, he cofounded the school’s mentoring program, Adopt-A-School, which enables students to get hands-on experience with an industry leader.

“Thanks to my assistant Judith, who not only coordinates my schedule, but coordinates my life,” said a choked-up Mendelson, “I am so happy to be able to help the future of our industry.”

The Designing the Future award, which Mendelson received, was the first of its kind at the school. It was established to celebrate an individual whose achievements serve to inspire and instruct young people.

The event, which included a New York City-inspired student runway show, brought in $30,000 to benefit the high school.
