TWO HEARTS FOR SEARS: Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Mothers Work Inc. have joined forces to introduce Two Hearts Maternity, a private label brand created exclusively by Mothers Work. It debuted Thursday in 70 Sears stores in the Albany, N.Y.; Baltimore; Boston; Cleveland; Dallas, and Sacramento, Calif., markets. Two Hearts Maternity, which offers career, casual, shorts, dresses, denim, lingerie and nursing sleepwear, will replace the existing maternity lines in these stores. Most items are priced under $40. Mothers Work is the parent company to Motherhood Maternity, Mimi Maternity and A Pea in the Pod. “This is a great opportunity to have a whole new set of customers. It’s a winning combination — Sears has an outstanding reputation for selection and value while we are known for our fashion insight in maternity apparel, as well as our strength in sourcing, quality and pricing,” said Rebecca Matthias, president and chief operating officer of Mothers Work.
TIT FOR TAT?: The day after Jones Apparel Group and its subsidiary, MSC Acquisition Corp., filed a lawsuit against Maxwell Shoe Co. in a Delaware chancery court for alleged state court violations, Maxwell filed one of its own against the two in a Boston federal court on Thursday. Maxwell charged the two with securities law violations over alleged misstatements and omissions in connection with their proposed consent solicitation and tender offer for shares of Maxwell stock. As reported, Jones is trying to acquire Maxwell. The footwear firm is seeking an order barring Jones and MSC from conducting their tender offer.
