MAXWELL SHOE SAID: Maxwell Shoe Co. said on Monday regarding the Jones Apparel Group Inc. tender offer, “With less than 2 percent of Maxwell Shoe Co.’s outstanding shares tendered into Jones’ offer, our stockholders have sent a clear message that they, too, believe Jones’ $20 per share offer is significantly inadequate.” As reported, Jones is attempting to acquire Maxwell, which manufactures the footwear for the Anne Klein brand. Jones acquired Anne Klein in a Kasper A.S.L. bankruptcy court auction last summer. Jones on Monday extended its $300 million tender offer by a month until May 17 at midnight. The deadline had been Monday.
POLO’S BABY BUYBACK: Industry sources said Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. is in talks to buy back its children’s wear license from S. Schwab Co. Executives at Polo declined comment. Polo has said in previous earnings conference calls that a key focus for the firm is on improving and controlling the distribution of Polo’s product lines. Its most recent foray in taking certain product lines in-house was apparel brand Lauren by Ralph Lauren. As reported, the Lauren license was held by Jones Apparel Group.
EVERLAST ADDS: Everlast Worldwide Inc. has added four independent directors to its board: Mark Ackereizen, Teddy Atlas, James McGuire Jr. and Jeffrey Schwartz. Ackereizen, a CPA, is a partner in an accounting taxation firm, while Atlas has been associated with boxing for 30 years as a fighter, trainer and television commentator. McGuire and Schwartz have been practicing attorneys for more than 35 years, Everlast said. The active apparel and sporting goods company now has 11 directors, six of whom are independent.
JCH HONOREES: The Edith and Carl Marks Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, a social services agency and affiliate agency of USA-Federation of New York, will honor Mel Goldfeder, senior vice president of marketing for Swank, and Hal Weiss, founder and president of Halen Apparel Co. Ltd. Both will receive the Gold Humanitarian Award, named in honor of their boyhood basketball coach, Milton Gold. The 77th annual dinner, which will take place June 17 at 6 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, is being chaired by Ben Cammarata, chairman of the TJX Cos.
