SPEEDO’S WINTER PUSH: Speedo is heading to the slopes. The swim giant said Wednesday it had signed endorsement deals with five athletes who will compete at the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, in February, marking the first time the brand has had a presence in winter sports. The company will unveil performance apparel for these athletes that uses its Fastskin FSII technology, which was introduced in swimwear at last year’s Summer Games in Athens. Speedo has signed deals with athletes Vonetta Flowers, Todd Hays, Jean Prahm, Noelle Pikus-Pace and Chris Soule.
FIRMENICH BENCHMARK: Swiss flavors and fragrance firm Firmenich has announced its annual sales topped 2 billion Swiss francs for the first time. The Geneva-based company reported sales of 2.04 billion Swiss francs, or 1.62 billion at average exchange rates, for its fiscal year ended June 30, up 3 percent versus the prior fiscal year in Swiss francs and 7.1 percent in local currencies. Firmenich said its body care business registered double-digit sales growth, and its home fragrance sales were boosted by the March acquisition of Noville, a South Hackensack, N.J.-based fragrance supplier for the scented candle industry. The company also said sales growth for the period was a result of its emerging markets and achieved despite slowing Western markets and rising energy and raw materials costs.
