Temporary USTR Named: The White House late Friday night named a deputy U.S. trade representative, Peter F. Allgeier, as the acting U.S. trade representative — the nation’s top trade chief — until a permanent selection is made. Robert Zoellick vacated the post of U.S. trade representative to become deputy secretary of state under Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and is expected to start in that position early this week. Among the contenders for Zoellick’s position are Grant Aldonas, Under Secretary of international trade at the Commerce Department; Gary Edson, former deputy assistant to the president for international economic affairs and deputy national security advisor; Josette Shiner, Deputy USTR and lead trade negotiator on trade issues for East Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and Robert M. Kimmitt, head of global policy at Time Warner Inc., and a former ambassador to Germany.
