Khaki Connection

NEW YORK — With most of their winter fashions cleared out, moderate price specialty chains, including The Gap, Express and Lerners New York, are now stocking up on spring clothes, especially khakis. Once considered a basic, they are enjoying a new fashion status — particularly since Donna Karan and Giorgio Armani touted khakis on the spring runways.

The Gap is serving up classic fit, pleated-front cotton pants as well as cotton stretch pants, shown with shiny black T-shirts and cotton cardigans. Express is featuring khaki stretch pants and short khaki skirts, merchandised with either cotton knit sweaters or with crisp white shirts tied at the waist. Other spring highlights at the three retailers include rayon floral dresses, tight knit tops and zipped-up jackets.
