One of the city’s more business-minded young designers, Malaika Raiss has been working to broaden her girly-cool ethos. She recently introduced a Star Wars jewelry collection, and, for fall, a range of soft-yet-structured pieces inspired by the work of architect Alvar Aalto felt new. Raiss created her own flower camouflage print, distorting it with stripes. The bloom-ouflage shouted on an eye-popping trenchcoat and whispered on a sheer blouse, while more delicate florals appeared on a quilted nylon cropped jacket and an asymmetric skirt. Tank tops in silk, chiffon and grommet-punctured leather added dimension to wispy A-line skirts and dresses, as did large gauge or sheer-inset knits. The designer continues to move into what she calls “semicouture.” Here, that meant a lush wool jumpsuit and strapless gown, both decorated with lines of tape embroidery.
