Mafalda von Hessen: Rome-based Mafalda von Hessen launched capsule collections in 2013 based on a desire to “reflect her sportswear-meets-chic lifestyle, her background and fashion flair.” With a backstory that includes a master’s degree in theater, stage and costume design from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, she wanted to create for the woman who seeks practical and versatile elegance.
Inspired by a wool folk jacket from 1890 that belonged to her great-grandmother, von Hessen infused her first full collection with old-world nostalgia enlivened by a modern approach. The lineup consisted mostly of stand-alone pieces, or “elements” as the designer prefers to call them, with outerwear playing a crucial role. A hooded black-leather pullover, a clear raincoat, a quilted wool camouflage jacquard cape and suede-shearling gilets stood out. These were worn with bicolor turtlenecks, suede trousers, wool stretch dresses and circle wrap skirts. Retail prices range from $678 for tops and skirts to $3,393 for coats, at the current exchange rate.
