When Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani exploded onto the fashion scene in 2003 with their labels JLO by Jennifer Lopez and L.A.M.B., respectively, they ushered in a whole new era of celebrity culture in fashion. Just as designers were becoming celebrities, celebrities were becoming designers. And practically an entirely new beat for the paper was born. Sure, Jaclyn Smith launched a collection at Kmart in 1985 and Sean “Diddy” Combs and Kimora Lee Simmons introduced their lines in the late Nineties, but once Lopez and Stefani made their debuts (with flashy runway shows to boot), it seemed like everyone with a marquee name was getting in on the game soon after. (Cases in point: Jessica Simpson, Eve, Jaime Pressly, Beyoncé Knowles, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian, are just a few.) A few proved to have staying power, among them Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Stefani, Timberlake and Beckham, who scored a highly competitive front page in WWD during the Spring 2011 collections. The nadir: Lindsay Lohan and her pasties for Emanuel Ungaro. The trend continues to wax more than wane. Recent additions include both A-listers (Madonna; Sarah Jessica Parker) and those skirting the edge of fame (Lauren Conrad).
