Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin have one woman to thank for their soaring success: Sarah Jessica Parker, or rather, her “Sex and the City” character, Carrie Bradshaw. All three designers were catapulted to cult status, thanks to the show and Bradshaw’s footwear fetish (and that’s not even counting the two feature films that were released). In Sex and the City 2, Louboutin’s profile was raised even higher, thanks to his brand’s placement in the opening scenes of the movie.

In every episode of HBO’s megahit, which revolved around the friendship and love lives of Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, designers were name-checked so often they could almost be mistaken for characters in the show. Bradshaw once described a Richard Prince Louis Vuitton bag as “the best money I ever spent,” and the beginning of the first film was all but centered on her custom-made wedding gown from Vivienne Westwood (after the movie was released, Net-a-porter sold out of a version of the dress.) Of course, the real woman behind all of this is Patricia Field, whose styling both reflected the zeitgeist and often set new trends. “They didn’t write the show for fashion,” Field said in WWD, “but they realized it was the hook and latched on to it.”
