It’s no secret that Roland Mouret loves dresses. Now he’s sharing the love with Banana Republic.

Mouret will bring his linear, graphic tailoring to select Banana Republic stores worldwide in August.
The 25-piece Roland Mouret for Banana Republic collection features a tight color palette grounded in black with hints of white, bright blue and hot pink and colorblocking. There are skirts, tops, pants and sweaters in the collection, but the dresses are the main event.
“Roland is famous for his dresses and we have a very successful dress business,” said Melloney Birkett, vice president of women’s design at Banana Republic.
“It’s not a copy of my clothes in a less expensive [version], but the experience of a fitted dress for the Banana Republic customer,” Mouret said in an interview. “You should be able to try on a dress that fits you like a glove.”
Mouret said he was attracted to Banana’s Sloan bi-stretch cotton fabric that the company has been developing for some time. “When I saw that fabric I was so interested in working with it in my way,” he said. “The way they were working with it was a different attitude toward cutting.” Mouret hand draped, cut and pinned the dresses on the body.
“We worked with Roland on building a dress block,” Birkett said. “These are feminine, flattering shapes. That was the magic Roland brought — draping and being able to understand the woman’s body. He made the dress shape with fewer seams.”
Prices for the collection range from $49.50 for belts to $165 for a dress.
Mouret will participate in the advertising campaign, which will be filmed in New York. “It will represent the new direction in which Banana Republic is moving,” he said. “It will have more of a sense of youth.”
Mouret’s next project is opening a store on Madison Avenue and 75th Street in June. “The kind of presence I’ll have this year in New York” will be amazing, he said.
