In an effort to groom rising stars in fashion management, the New York City Economic Development Corporation has teamed up with 92Y to launch NYC Fashion Fellows, a yearlong fellowship program.

The 20 winners will first have to get the approval of an advisory committee made up of LF USA’s Richard Darling, Diane von Furstenberg, Terry J. Lundgren, Andrew Rosen and Fern Mallis. These in-the-know executives will later line up mentors and host various sessions for the fellows throughout the year.

NYC Fashion Fellows is one of six initiatives drawn from Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Fashion.NYC.2020 plan, which is geared to bolstering the city’s fashion industry, an EDC spokesman said. There are currently 173,000 people working in fashion in New York City, accounting for 5.7 percent of the city’s workforce, and generating nearly $2 billion in tax revenue annually.

In order to be eligible for executive-level mentoring, networking and career workshops, candidates must have at least five years of work experience in a New York-based company or a global one with U.S. headquarters in New York. They also need to be recommended by a current supervisor or business associate. Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 28. Once nominated, applicants will be given access to the application and a five-essay questionnaire, which must be submitted by Oct. 5 and 15, respectively.
