The cause of death was a heart attack, said Sean John’s executive vice president, Jeff Tweedy.

Sani was a partner in Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ Sean John brand for around five years until about seven months ago, when Ron Burkle came on board as a financial backer. Sani’s company had served as a Sean John financial backer.

Tweedy said Sani preferred working behind the scenes, handling his duties in finance and production.

“When Puffy and I started the company, we were looking for a partner in the production and financial end,” Tweedy said. “After meeting with several people, what stuck out most about Ashok was that he was always a family person. His office was full of pictures of his family members and it reminded me that no matter what your success in business was, he knew what was important in life. We can easily get caught up in this business, but Ashok was my bridge between reality and fantasy.”

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, in Manhattan.

Sani is survived by his wife, Shalu, and two children, Suraj and Mohnish.
