Is Wonder Woman having a comeback? Last month, reports surfaced that Warner Bros. TV was developing a remake with producer David E. Kelley and, next spring, MAC Cosmetics will unveil a Wonder Woman-themed color cosmetics collection with DC Comics. Tonight, moreover, Ms. Diana Prince herself, Lynda Carter, takes over Feinstein’s at Loews Regency for her one woman show “Wicked Cool,” which plays till Saturday. (Expect jazz and bluesy crooning, though, not twirling and bullet-deflecting bracelets.) In keeping with the moment, WWD looks back at a fashion-superhero crossover from 2008. That’s when Diane von Furstenberg presented a holiday collection inspired by all things Wonder Woman, and released her own comic book, “Be the Wonder Woman You Can Be, Featuring the Adventures of Diva, Viva & Fifa,” with illustrations by artist Konstantin Kakanias.
“I am Diva, Viva and Fifa altogether, I am DVF,” von Furstenberg told WWD that October. “It’s not so much that I identify with each of them, though. The idea is that, if you feel insecure, look at yourself in the mirror, and through the reflection remember to be the Wonder Woman you can be. That’s my message.” Thus, Diva scores a promotion by pointing out a successful leveraged buyout was her idea; Viva musters up the courage to sing on stage and lands a recording deal, while Fifa, empowered to hire a babysitter, goes to an award ceremony and wins the honor for Gourmet Cooking. “Last weekend, I was in the car with my granddaughter Antonia, and she was reading it out loud,” the designer continued. “I just thought, ‘What a wonderful message.’ There is a Wonder Woman in each of us, and once you understand that, you get what you want.” — Venessa Lau
