- BEAUTY OF THE BEAST: Why can’t a store be more like Godzilla? That seems to be the logic of French architect Kristian Gavoille.
The new 1,940-square-foot jeans store he designed for Marithé and François Girbaud in Tokyo, which opened last week, has walls covered with silicone tiles to look like scales off a dragon’s back. Chairs, too, have a reptilian feel and white benches throb with red light, like a beating heart, as shoppers try on shoes.
“A true transformation into an animal,” said Gavoille, who worked with Philippe Starck for six years before setting up his own design firm.
