ELLESSE BOLSTERS TEAM: Ellesse, the 40-year-old Italian athletic brand, has beefed up its design team for this month’s relaunch.

Newcomers include Carlo Grippo, director of apparel and accessories; Chris Lee, consultant creative director; Timo Pape, head of footwear, and David Mark Brown, director of product development and sourcing footwear, apparel and accessories. They joined the company in January and report to Bill Sweeney, who was named president of Ellesse International last year.

The brand’s new design team hailed from other athletic labels. Grippo was director of commercial at Belfe SpA, Lee served as creative director at Reebok International, and Pape and Brown were global footwear marketing manager and head of project management for Adidas Originals’ division, respectively.

Next week, Ellesse’s NYC ’84 Marathon line of apparel will debut at Urban Outfitters, Alife and other specialty stores. This marks the brand’s return to more sportswear-oriented looks with zip-front jackets, pants, tanks, T-shirts and shorts. In recent years, tenniswear has been Ellesse’s main apparel business. In 1995, Pentland acquired Ellesse, put Sweeney at the helm last year and opened a New York showroom at 141 West 36th Street last year.
