BRANCHING OUT: KMS Research Inc. has embarked on a campaign to raise the profile of the KMS brand among salon professionals beyond the West Coast, the KAO Corp.-owned brand’s home territory. For starters, hairstylist Nick Arrojo has led a series of KMS demonstrative hair shows in Boston, Montreal and Chicago to audiences of 500 salon professionals. And, KMS’ biggest biannual show, Style Council, will be held in January — the first to feature Arrojo as U.S. artistic director. This past spring the company opened its inaugural concept salon, a 4,000-square-foot space on Manhattan’s Varick Street, called Arrojo Studio. The salon is expected to reach sales of $1 million and could double that figure in the next year.
33 NEW FLAVORS: Extracts, the trade show for aromatherapy, personal care and fragrance, is expecting 33 new companies to exhibit at its fall show, held at the Jacob K. Javits Center Sept. 19-22. Some of the first-timers include Rachel Perry, MD Salon Services and French companies Comptoir Sud Pacifique and Roger & Gallet.
WAITING TO EXHALE: Exhale, a new urban spa concept, has opened its first location — a 10,000-square-foot space —on Manhattan’s Madison Avenue. The spa’s first-year sales are estimated to be around $2 million. Exhale is also launching a six-item product line, which includes a cleanser, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner and two intensive skin care items, 28-day Skin Care Transformation and Serum 3. A second, 12,000-square-foot location on Central Park South is scheduled for late November.
CLEAN THERAPY: Caldrea home cleaning products is reintroducing its Pineapple Nutmeg scent for holiday. Hand soaps, dish liquids and countertop cleansers in the special scent will be available this month through December at stores such Epicure Market in Miami Beach and Ricky’s in New York. Products are fragranced with essential oils of nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon and orange.
MINTY FRESH: The Aura division of Naturelle, Inc., a part of Zotos International, is launching a five-item hair care collection infused with rosemary and mint. A shampoo, rinse, styling gel, mousse and cream wax is now available under the Aura brand at salons and beauty supply stores nationwide. Aura Rosemary Mint retails for $4.99 for the shampoo and conditioner and $5.99 for styling products.
NEW BOSS: Dunnan Edell has been named president and chief operating officer of CCA Industries. Prior to this position, Edell served as senior executive vice president. Edell’s father, David Edell, former president and chief operating officer, continues to serve as chief executive of the company, as well as chairman of the board. CCA makes Solar Sense sun care products and Bikini Zone cremes and gels.
WHITE OUT: One of Manhattan’s newest spas doesn’t offer Thai massage or a hot stone facial. Instead, teeth services are listed on Quickbleach’s treatment roster. One of the newest services is a one-hour teeth-whitening treatment for $399. For two people, the cost drops to $750. And for those seeking a true bargain, six power-bleaching sessions, performed biannually, costs $999, a savings of close to $300. Quickbleach, which is located at 127 E. 56th Street, staffs dentists and uses Rembrandt branded products.
KEVIN’S SHOW: Hair stylist Kevin Murphy, formerly of Kusco-Murphy hair care, has branched out on his own and developed a line of seven styling products. Murphy said his aim was to design an easy-to-understand line that provides instant results. The line includes fresh.hair, a spray that removes dirt and excess oil from dry hair with the rub of a towel and easy.rider, designed to give hair a soft hold and glossy sheen.
ENVIRONMENTAL RULES: When clients speak, Pamela Rae listens. Rae, the owner and operator of Solavie Spa Retreat in Sun Valley, Idaho, and also a biochemist, wanted to help out her well-traveled clientele who were often complaining that their beauty products didn’t perform consistently in different climates. So Rae set out to design a line formulated for six different environment types. There are face, hair and body washes designed to stand up to the conditions of desert, mountain, urban, tropical, beach and plains living. Products, which cost approximately $28 each, even snap together for easy travel usage. Solavie is available in Flight 001, as well as in OraOxygen, an airport-based Oxygen Wellness Spa in Calgary, Amsterdam and Detroit.
