NEW YORK — It’s all about the yarn. That’s what students at the Fashion Institute of Technology found out when designing their creations for the new exhibit “Let Us Spin You a Yarn: FIT Students Design With Lion Brand Yarn,” which runs at the school’s museum through Nov. 29.

On display are more than 75 knit and woven creations that include garments, scarves, fabric swatches, conceptual fiber art and even jewelry. The yarn for the exhibit — which was created over two semesters by FIT textile and surface designers, as well as fashion design majors taking such courses as Introduction to Fiber Arts, Knit Fabric Design, Woven Design and Fashion Knit Design — was donated by the Lion Brand Yarn company, which just celebrated its 125th anniversary. In addition to donating yarn, the company also endowed a scholarship.

Many of the participating students welcomed the challenge of using yarn in different ways. Jessica Sanilardi, in her seventh semester at the school, designed a small piece of intricately woven fiber art — displayed on a metal ring — that took approximately 12 hours, or three classes, to complete.

Sophomore Karianne Sykora created a swatch of woven fabric as part of the Woven Design class she was taking. “It’s interesting because you can use the same warp yarn in different ways by adding different colors in the fill,” Sykora said.

Ellen Hess, professor for the Woven Design class, said she instructed the students to use the yarn to its best advantage. “I wanted them to create things that really showed off the yarn,” she said.

Arnetta Kenny, a professor in fashion design and fabric styling, added that the selection provided by Lion was great, allowing students to unleash their creativity. “They loved the bright colors and furry yarns the most,” she said.
