In November 1977, The American Cancer Society established the Great American Smokeout to encourage smokers to quit for one day. Since then, of course, we’ve come a long way, and cigarettes are no longer the socially acceptable — and oftentimes glamorous — accessory they once were. Here, WWD’s photographers cut through the haze with iconic shots of the habit that once was.
