JOINT MARKETING: Hornwood Inc. and Lee Fashion Fabrics Inc. have agreed to form a joint venture marketing company set to begin operations on Aug. 26. The venture will combine Lee Fashion’s export business, overseas production capability and marketing division with Hornwood’s textile facilities and industrial products business. As part of the plan, Lee will consolidate its dyeing and finishing operations into a Lilesville, N.C., Hornwood plant from its own facility in Johnstown, N.Y. The Johnstown factory will continue to house Lee Fashion’s embossing and laminating operations.

OPTIMER’S APPOINTMENT: Barry Garlick has been named president of Optimer Performance Fibers, a Wilmington, Del.-based textile marketing company. Garlick was vice president of marketing and business development for Asia and the Western region of the U.S. since he joined the company in November 2000. Garlick will be responsible for worldwide sales, marketing and advertising, as well as creating global marketing alliances. Optimer holds the patent on Dri-release, a polyester-and-cotton wicking yarn. In October, Optimer formed a joint venture with Japan’s Mitsui & Co. to license the rights to produce Dri-release yarn in Asia, closer to where garments are produced.

HIGHTOWER HIRE: Textile consulting firm Werner International recently named Neil Hightower vice president of marketing for the Reston, Va.-based firm. Hightower was previously chief executive officer of Thomaston Mills Inc. and will continue to work from his Thomaston, Ga., office.
