NEW YORK — The Gorillaz, a virtual band made up of sometimes-merry cartoon characters, have finally hit town after raucous success in the U.K. Backed by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlitt, the Crayola-colored group played before a packed house at the Hammerstein Ballroom here and ignited the crowd with its blend of pop, rock and hip-hop set to a video montage.

At the show, the crowd was strictly Euro chic. This meant that cutesy Britney-style T-shirts were nowhere to be seen, replaced with more sarcastic fare — “Your favorite band sucks” was scrawled across one top. Others were customized with leather laces, as were the homemade-looking patchwork skirts, sometimes layered over pants. While snorkel parkas and battered military coats paraded through the doors, the biggest trend of the night by far was all the Diesel denim and, of course, Seven jeans.
