London’s Frieze Art Fair launched its New York edition on Thursday, in a 250,000-square-foot tent on Randall’s Island. The space is reportedly the largest temporary structure of its kind ever built in the United States, but that wasn’t the only thing to gawk at. Artists, curators, gallery owners, buyers and the just plain curious walked the aisles in what was surely one of the best fashion “shows” in New York City. Reigning looks were inventive and funky — from elegantly to grungily so — with clever styling, wacky hair, plenty of color and, of course, artsy black, mostly with a Japanese flair. Unlike many social gatherings, what made the fashion spirit so special here was that no two attendees looked alike.
