A major “up-and-comer” in terms of development, Atlanta is becoming the newest luxury destination. WWD reported at the end of last month at least three new luxury publications geared for the city’s more affluent customers: Atlanta Peach, Atlantan, and Pink; “Atlanta’s luxury market is strong and grown incredibly quickly,” Atlanta Advertising Executive John Padgett Powell said. Both Barney’s New York and Gap’s newest concept, Forth and Towne, are considering opening stores here in the next few months.

This three county metropolitan area covers central New Jersey to the New York Harbor and beyond to the Delaware River. It is the third largest in the state, with a population of nearly 1.2 million, and is touted by the 2000 Census report to have a median household income 50 percent above the nationwide figure. Many cities are included in the three counties, but it is New Brunswick and Perth Amboy which give the area its urban character.

14. Oakland, Calif.

Oakland plays a major part in a state which is a nationwide leader in terms of development. The area’s quiet suburbia is being quickly invaded by major retailers. The introduction of Wal-Mart last year opened the door for bigger companies such as Federated to begin looking at the city for its potential growth. “Having a retailer of Wal-Mart’s caliber certainly sends a clear message to other retailers,” Keira Williams, retail specialist for the city said, “It gives Oakland much higher visibility.”

15. New York

Known as the fashion capital of the United States, New York City is home of luxury brand flagships such as Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Fendi, and Bergdorf Goodman. Most recently, WWD announced at the beginning of this month Pomellato Jewels USA’s plans to open its first U.S. Shop on Madison Avenue this October. The brand, which offers handcrafted stones detailed with colored gems, reported 28.2 percent rise in sales for its North American Division.

16. Newark, N.J.

Dallas is the ninth largest city in the U.S. and a bona-fide center for luxury shopping. The metropolis is home to the National historic landmark of Highland Park Village, which offers a selection of stores such as Chanel, Hermes, Ralph Lauren and Jimmy Choo. Other upscale shopping districts include the Galleria Dallas mall, which houses Gucci, Celine and Louis Vuitton boutiques, and the NorthPark Center, which includes both Burberry and Kate Spade.

18. Los Angeles-Long Beach, Calif.

The two areas share little in common besides the heavy tourism rampant in both. While Long Beach is characterized by its quaint shopping and beautiful beaches, Los Angeles is famous for Beverly Hills’ celebrity-studded Rodeo Drive. One of the most upscale streets in the United States, Rodeo Drive is speckled with luxury giants such as Bulgari, Chanel, Christian Dior and Cartier shops, to name a few. Recently designed in the exclusive 90210 zip code, Two Rodeo is a Parisian-styled street center located at the entrance to Rodeo Drive at Wilshire, and offers accessories from Persol and Max & Co.

19. Denver, Colo.

The “mile high city” is another hot destination for luxury brands. WWD reported at the end of March this year that Sephora’s plans to open its newest concept – Sephora USA, a cosmetic shopping and spa treatment combined environment — in the Denver market by the end of this year. Cherry Creek Shopping Center is also located here, with an offering of Anthropologie, Cole Haan, Movado, among others.

20. Boulder-Longmont, Colo.
Women’s accessories index: 153

The Boulder-Longmont region consists primarily of the two cities, though the area also encompasses smaller towns such as Lyons, which was featured in the top ten U.S. Growing counties for 2004 to 2005, according to a March 16, 2006 U.S. Census press release. The towns offer a unique shopping experience, where jewel-seekers can visit shops like Experience Jewelry Design. Here, customers can design their own jewelry of the highest quality stones and metals.
