Yang Mi

NEW YORK — Yang Mi, the Chinese actress and singer, has been named the first brand ambassador for Michael Kors.

The news was revealed this morning at a press conference at the Park Hyatt Hotel here.

The appointment furthers the relationship between Mi, 31, and Michael Kors that has been developing over the last few years.

Most recently, Mi collaborated with Kors on an exclusive Mercer handbag available at DFS locations this fall. Last May, the actress attended the Met Costume Ball as a guest of the designer sporting a custom Michael Kors Collection gown. She also sat in the front row of Kors’ spring runway show last February. She will make her first public appearance in her new role at the designer’s spring 2018 runway show on Wednesday morning at Spring Studios.

Earlier, Mi was the star of the global Michael Kors Young series events: 2015’s Young China in Beijing and 2016’s Young Power event in Shanghai.

“Yang Mi is the perfect combination of smart and chic,” said Michael Kors. “We’re happy to welcome her to the Michael Kors family.”

Mi has over 70 million followers on Chinese social media site Weibo and is one of the biggest stars in China. She has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines in China such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Grazia and L’Officiel.

“Yang Mi is one of the most influential trendsetters in China right now,” said John D. Idol, chairman and chief executive officer of Kors. “People love when she wears Michael Kors, and we’re excited to continue our relationship with her as our brand ambassador.”

Her first campaign as a Michael Kors brand ambassador will be Michael Kors The Walk, the brand’s seasonal street style campaign shot by Tommy Ton, this fall.

Asia, cited as the most important territory for Kors, is an area of growth opportunity for the brand. The company has been experiencing an increase in sales in the region.

Idol previously said that  the main growth drivers for the company are Kors’ burgeoning men’s category and its retail presence in Asia, each of which Idol said can become $1 billion segments of the brand.

“I’m so happy to be here today,” said Mi, through an interpreter. She said she had suffered jet lag but was feeling much better.

Dressed Tuesday in a black leather dress with a big belt, and sporting large diamond earrings, Mi recalled her experience accompanying Kors to the Met Ball and said it was a great party. She said she wore a custom-made dress which was beautiful. “I loved it, it’s very spectacular and a great experience,” she said.

Mi described the experience of doing the campaign shoot for The Walk in London as working with “a very professional team.”

Asked what this partnership means to her, she said, “I think it’s very exciting.” She said what attracted her to Michael Kors was that it’s a mix of a luxury brand, that also has a sporty feeling. “It makes you feel very comfortable, luxurious and sporty,” she said.

As for how she was spending her time in New York — today is her 31st birthday — she said, she’s been doing a lot of shooting, she ordered pasta, and she’s had a lot of jet lag. “I have been up since 3 or 4 in the morning,” she said.

She said what she looks forward to doing in New York was having a hot dog and visiting some vintage stores.
