His latest resort collection wasn’t the only news at Alexander Wang’s showroom on Tuesday. He also announced an as yet unnamed new collection of “essentials,” which will open with a soft launch with resort, as well as his first-ever store due “sometime this year” in New York. For the latter, a lease is close to being signed, though Wang would not disclose the location. He did, however, have more to say about the concept behind the new line, which will start with a tightly edited range of three pants, two jackets and one flat-front shirt. “After last season we started looking at our carry-over business, what our customers come back for again and again.” said Wang, noting that prices align with his main collection’s opening numbers ($260-$550). “There’s also this perception that we’re very young. Going to trunk shows, women always say, ‘Oh my gosh, I love your brand.’ This is our way of being more democratic,” he noted. And while the initial offer, which includes a crisp leather blazer and tailored trouser, has Wang’s typical urban attitude, it tends toward his classic side without competing with T, Wang’s concept based on T-shirt dressing. “T is very casual and easy,” he said. “I don’t want to say [the new line] is based on tailoring or business attire, but they’re two different focuses.”
