Designer Amsale Aberra spent a few days in Los Angeles last week to shoot her latest bridal campaign and also lend support to her daughter, up-and-coming R&B singer Rachel Brown, 28. Aberra was on set for the video shoot for Brown’s latest single “You Got Me,” off her EP “The Band.” Brown’s musical style, which incorporates her Ethiopian, Bermudian and Southern roots, runs counter to the overly synthesized, electronic sound that many artists are embracing. Her West African band plays the kora and Brown herself plays the ukulele.
“Growing up around fashion, I always took it for granted that it was just part of the environment, like paint on the wall. I never wanted to be a designer,” said Brown, who did seek her mother’s advice on her video wardrobe. To match the whimsical, throwback style of the song, they conceptualized a colorful, vintage look carried out by stylist Gianni Catalina.
There were some new pieces as well by Fausto Puglisi, but most of the outfits are vintage, including one Karl Lagerfeld dress.
The video, directed by Michael Adrian, centers around Brown and a furry sidekick spending the day together at the beach, watching movies and having a slumber party.
When she’s performing live, Brown adopts more sequins and sparkle. She says, “I always go to my mom for a final look because I really trust her eye.”
