Athleta today opened its fourth store in Manhattan and 112th nationwide, a 3,500-square-foot unit at 121 Wooster Street in SoHo in Manhattan.
The company unveiled a store in El Segundo, Calif., in late July and is planning to open five more stores by the end of the year. Two of the locations have been identified: Hoboken, N.J., and Leawood, Kan.
Athleta offers free fitness classes on a first-come, first-served basis. Each location offers a different class schedule ranging from Wellness Wednesday and Flow With Yoga to Zumba and Base Body Blast. A spokeswoman said fitness instructors from the neighborhood are being hired to teach the classes.
Athleta’s prices are lower than competitor Lululemon and it offers a broad range of products for both indoor and outdoor sports. Athleta was acquired by Gap Inc. for $148 million in 2008, when its business was dedicated to online and catalogue sales.
Former Gap Inc. chief executive officer Glenn Murphy said last year that “Athleta is on a path to become the Gap’s fourth major brand. I am getting happier with that acquisition.”
