BANDING TOGETHER: Retail events by nature can ring inauthentic when a designer is placed within a Beverly Hills department store fishbowl, but to toast Band of Outsiders’ 10th anniversary, Barneys New York went to Scott Sternberg’s neighborhood — Los Angeles’ hip Silverlake — to host a dinner along with actor Aziz Ansari at Café Stella. “I’ve known Scott like six or seven years, and remember doing one of my first photo shoots where you get to pick your clothes. I kept picking Band of Outsiders, then when I needed to get clothes, I remembered that and met Scott, and we’ve been friends throughout the years,” said Ansari. “It’s legit, and the clothes are like, fitted for me.”
The lithe actor was among other local friends of the brand such as actor Adam Scott, singer Nicole Simone, stylist Shirley Kurata, chef Jon Shook and artist Alex Israel. “I’m now 40, and I’m good with it,” said Sternberg after the wine-filled family-style dinner. “I’m sober in a very positive way, meaning, ‘OK, 10 years…what did we do right; what did we f–k up; how do we move forward?’ Fashion is about being superfresh, so you gotta be careful that you don’t overthink that because it’s just gotta be fluid. In terms of the business, I think about purpose and what I want to make more of and less of. Up until now, it’s been really fluid, and you can’t take that for granted because a lot of people are doing really great stuff, so you have to focus on what you do really well.”
