OFF THE GRID: Bloomingdale’s splashy Super Bowl array of one-of-a-kind “haute couture” football helmets was a sellout.
Styled by members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in conjunction with the National Football League, all 48 helmets were displayed in the windows of Bloomingdale’s 59th Street store and sold through an online auction that concluded Tuesday, raising $73,000 for the NFL Foundation. The steely, riveted headgear by John Varvatos, inspired by the gridiron gladiators, commanded the highest bid, selling for $5,025. Junk Food’s vintage leather helmet was the second highest, selling for $3,925.
