BRIAN REYES FOR BRITS: Designer Brian Reyes hit London last week to talk up his spring collection, which launches at Harvey Nichols and Matches early next year. “We’ve been monitoring Europe carefully and it’s a good time [to launch here], now that the market is picking up,” said Reyes over an Earl Grey tea at Browns Hotel in Mayfair. “We’re seeing that in our selling for fall and spring — people do crave things; they do want things.” He also met with the London-based footwear designer Georgina Goodman to discuss the shoes she’ll create for Reyes’ fall 2010 collection, which will take an artistic turn. Reyes is working with the Ukrainian artist Oksana Mas, whose colorful paintings are worked from layers of varnish and paint, to create prints for his fall line. And Reyes believes the color-drenched, painterly prints that also make up his spring collection will be some of his bestsellers in London, thanks to the city’s often-gloomy climate. “Gray light makes color seem so much more vibrant, it jumps out at you — it’s definitely the best way to see color,” he said.

MOVING ON: Andrew Glenn, Topshop’s marketing director, will be leaving his post at the end of December, WWD has learned. Glenn, who has been at the British retailer since June 2008 and who helped launch Topshop’s U.S. outpost in the spring, will be taking a break from working life and plans to travel. Before joining Topshop, Glenn was communications director at Louis Vuitton U.K.
FINE PRINT: A group of New York editors laughed themselves hoarse last week at “Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words,” as guests of Bismarck Phillips and IWC watches. The off-off-off Broadway show features a rotating cast of comedic actors giving deadpan readings of excerpts from celebrity biographies of questionable literary merit. This week the cast included Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig, Rachel Dratch and Sherri Shepherd; and the featured authors included Suzanne Somers, Vanna White and the Jonas Brothers.
LA VIE IN MILAN: On Dec. 7, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will receive the Ambrogino D’oro, a high-profile award conferred annually by the Municipality of Milan to citizens who have distinguished themselves and contributed to the support and well-being of the city. The 45-year-old award gets its name from Saint Ambrogio, Milan’s patron saint, who is celebrated on the same day the award is given.
“We are extremely honored and excited to receive this award. Milan is not only our city and where our home is, but also the place that allowed us to make our dream come true. Milan has given us a lot and we cannot be but happy that our work contributed to its well-being,” said Gabbana, a true Milanese, adding he’s heard of the Ambrogino D’oro award since he was in primary school, when he believed it was given to heroes.
