BRITISH BLOOMS: When Mulberry creative director Emma Hill and U.S. president Carl Barbato made their way to Los Angeles for the company’s seasonal dinner at Chateau Marmont on Thursday, guests expecting more of the company’s creative props and decor weren’t disappointed. In keeping with the English garden theme, seven-foot-high pansies, posies and mulberries adorned the poolside patio, causing Shiva Rose to stop and smell the flowers for an Instagram moment. “All the ladylike clothes are making me rethink boho,” she mused as she considered her pleated lace frock and the prim outfits worn by Brits Emily Mortimer, Ashley Madekwe and Alice Eve, plus Mena Suvari and Liz Goldwyn. But some of the more realistic props had a couple of guests momentarily confused. “It that a rat by the pool?” asked Mortimer’s friend. “Well, there are rats in the hills up here. I’ve seen them,” said Mortimer with a momentary look of horror. “No, it’s a giant mouse, he goes with the other props,” clarified Hill.
Choosing to go daring rather than girlish, Brit Marling worked a head-to-toe butterfly print look, a key motif in the fall collection. But Mulberry, not satisfied with simply dressing celebrities in its wares, eschewed the garden-variety step-and-repeat wall in favor of a custom-made 3-D blue-and-pink-lit butterfly installation that Marling and the other starlets happily posed in front of.
