BURDEN OF PROF: Christine Beauchamp and Tracy Gardner agreed — their stints, in the fall and spring semesters, respectively, as Guess Distinguished Visiting Professors in fashion and fashion business at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study were among the most demanding experiences of their lives. “One of the most frightening things that you will ever do,” mused Gardner. “Standing in front of 20 bright, creative students having never taught before. I’d rather run a company.”

The final remark seemed particularly apropos following Gardner’s appointment last week as chief creative officer of Delia’s Inc., a post considered likely to segue into the chief executive officer’s role this summer.

Guess Inc. last year endowed the chair with $2.5 million, supplemented by $250,000 from the Maurice Marciano Family Foundation. At a reception Friday night at NYU celebrating this effort to guarantee that outstanding fashion students would receive hands-on business direction to go with their established creativity, Maurice Marciano, Guess’ cofounder and chairman, was energized both by the success of the program and news earlier in the day of Guess’ victory over Gucci in an Italian trademark dispute. Macy’s Inc. ceo Terry J. Lundgren was on hand to lend support as a procession of rtw — ready-to-work — students unanimously gave their profs A grades with the same comment: “Amazing.”
