HEALTH HOUR: Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Francisco Costa, Derek Lam, Joseph Altuzarra, Olivier Theyskens and Reed Krakoff attended Tuesday’s CFDA Health Initiative panel, which was moderated by Alina Cho and featured Karolina Kurkova, Elettra Wiedemann, Monique Pean and Arianna Huffington talking about how to achieve a balanced lifestyle, deal with the industry’s pressures and detect eating disorders.
Wiedemann recalled her fears when she first started. “I was frankly totally heartbroken whenever I wasn’t cast in a show,” she said. “It’s definitely difficult. That is the reason I decided to continue my education and get a master’s degree, because I felt it was very important to develop an identity outside of the fashion industry.”
Huffington talked about her daughter Isabella’s own struggles with eating disorders and lessons she learned from her mother, who used to tell her that failure was not the opposite of success but a stepping stone to it. She also had ample advice on how to stay healthy, foremost making sure to get enough sleep. “For many men, for some reason, sleep deprivation has become equated with virility,” Huffington said. “You get guys literally bragging how little they have been sleeping. Recently I had dinner with someone who said, ‘You know, I slept for four hours last night. I thought to myself, ‘If you had slept for five, this dinner would have been more interesting.’ ” — Marc Karimzadeh
