FAMILY AFFAIR: Gilles Mendel’s 20-year-old daughter Chloe Breitman-Mendel is making the most of her summer in Manhattan. She and her pal Mat Devine have launched Animal Royalty, a T-shirt label that carries such unexpected sayings as “Visitor” and “Peter Pan Is Dead.” Now that Nylon magazine has started selling the brand in its store, the pair is pursuing specailty stores and will set up an e-commerce site by the end of next month. They are also selling logo key chains made of fur tails attached to carabiners.


An undergrad at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Breitman-Mendel is also interning at Reddymade Design as Suchi Reddy’s assistant. In her free time, the aspiring designer is creating a customized T-shirt for The Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming tour.


Animal Royalty plans to roll out lifestyle products that are reflect the founders’ offbeat sensibilities. “Everything is very representative of Matt and me. I think we’re very funny and awkward. When people see us, they think, ‘They’re weird.’” she said.


Breitman-Mendel recruited her five brothers including Sacha Mendel to appear in Animal Royalty’s first lookbook at the artists Ran Ortner’s studio. And she said she is always eager to get advice from her father. “I ask him questions all the time. My dad always says, ‘Do whatever you want to. I trust you. If you do something stupid, it’s OK.’” said Breitman-Mendel, adding, “He wants to hang up the T-shirts in his office.”
