GROWING UP: Chris May has left Chanel to become group business development director at Selfridges Group in London, a new position. May, who was business development director at Chanel, will join the British retailer on December 1 and report to Paul Kelly, group managing director. The store said the position is very much a group-wide one, and May’s remit will be to support Kelly as all of the businesses in the portfolio —Selfridges, Brown Thomas, Holt Renfrew and the Dutch department store De Bijenkorf — expand.
As reported, Selfridges’ London unit is undergoing a major expansion program – to the tune of 300 million pounds, or $477 million, at current exchange rates — in expanding its accessories space over the next five years. Works are to begin next month, with the accessories area eventually doubling in size to 50,000 square feet on the ground floor. In addition to handbags, it will offer eyewear, small leather goods, and brands ranging from the big luxury names, to smaller labels.
