BIG TICKET: Christie’s Hong Kong bureau on Monday marked the sale of the world’s most expensive handbag ever auctioned. The Hermès 30-centimeter Birkin bag, fabricated of rare Himalayan crocodile and accented with diamond-encrusted white gold hardware, sold for 2,320,000 Hong Kong dollars, or $300,168 at current exchange. It was originally produced in 2008.
True to handbag auction standards, the purse’s original owner was not revealed — as it’s understood that provenance does not add to the value of post-market accessories. The bag’s new owner wished to have their identity concealed.
