BEACH BABE: To celebrate summer and the 20th anniversary of Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, Los Angeles handbag designer Claire Vivier created a yellow-and-white striped canvas tote with a detachable blue mini foldover leather clutch, which debuted at a cocktail party in the hotel’s lobby bar on Wednesday, where several of the $220 accessories were promptly snapped up by visitors. “Do we ring these up as open food?” asked the hotel’s general manager. Claire Vivier is the third brand to collaborate on the hotel’s designer beach bag program, after Joie and Kate Spade. Vivier will also be teaming up with Apple to design iPad cases and is scouting spaces in New York’s West Village for her second retail store (the first opened in Los Angeles’ Silverlake neighborhood last year) and is considering a third store on the west side of Los Angeles. “We’ve created a little niche of Made in Los Angeles luxury amid changing economies and business models,” she said, adding, “I hope to continue growing in that space.”
