CUSTOM SERVICE: French contemporary brand Claudie Pierlot auctioned off art works featuring items customized by personalities including choreographer Benjamin Millepied and actress Mélanie Laurent at a charity event on Wednesday night. Proceeds are to aid female education programs.

French artist Benjamin Vautier, better known as Ben, incorporated photographs of the participants and their creations on a black background on which he wrote his signature slogans in white. Adding an unusual twist, the phrases were in Occitan, a minority language spoken in southern France and parts of Italy and Spain.
The 11 art works were on sale for 1,000 euros, or $1,350 at current exchange, during the event at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.

Claudie Pierlot had asked celebrities to personalize items using a customization kit featuring patches and studs that will go on sale today at its stores and online, priced $80. Proceeds from this, and a customized tank top that will go on sale in November, will go to French non-governmental organization La Chaîne de l’Espoir and UNESCO’s Malala Fund for Girls’ Right to Education.

Millepied whipped up black slippers and Laurent a straw hat. Other designs included a bag by French television presenter Mademoiselle Agnès, a striped sailor top by Chinese actress Zhang Xinyi and a black blazer by UNESCO Artist for Peace Guila Clara Kessous.

Kessous, who has taught courses on fashion and ethics at Harvard University, said she was flying to San Francisco the next day to take part in the Mélange Fashion Show, an event that uses fashion, dance and theater to celebrate different body types, ethnicities and ages on the runway.

Kessous said she would be modeling a dress by Jean Paul Gaultier and carrying a bag she has designed for French leather goods brand Le Tanneur to celebrate its 115th anniversary. She is also mulling a further collaboration with Claudie Pierlot, focused on mixing fashion with literature.
