New York’s creative class is drinking Club-Mate, a highly caffeinated soda from Germany that’s shaping up to be the demimonde’s Red Bull. Popular with Berlin computer coders in the early Aughts, the drink was later appropriated by the city’s rave scene, who preferred to spike it with alcohol for effect. Now, it’s stocked in the local offices of Facebook, Kickstarter, Gawker Media and bodegas all over the Lower East Side and Brooklyn. Early adopters, though, got theirs at the arty dive bar Beverly’s.
