HACK ATTACK: Dazed Media cofounder Jefferson Hack explores his own life in the media — and his experience editing an indie magazine — in a new book, “We Can’t Do This Alone: Jefferson Hack the System.”
Published by Rizzoli International Publications, the 175-page tome features a series of original slogan artworks by Hack and the Italian creative director Ferdinando Verderi, who has worked with Chanel, Google and Nike.
The cofounder of Dazed, AnOther and Another Man said he wants the book to convey, “that everyone is media, that everyone has the ability to effect change and affect consciousness.”
The book includes Hack’s interviews with names including Tilda Swinton, Rankin, Douglas Coupland, Björk and Aimee Mullins. It also features 25 quotes that have influenced Hack throughout his career including “A Cultural Resistance Movement,” “Making It Up As We Go Along” and “If You Can’t Afford It, Steal It.”
Hack and Rizzoli partnered with Kodak to create 5,000 unique covers using its Kodak Prosper 6000, a printing technology where images were “fed into the software” creating different covers.
To coincide with the launch in France, Colette will mount an exhibition of the slogans, and the French fashion brand Each x Other will offer a limited-edition range of eco-cotton T-shirts priced from 155 euros, or $173, to 255 euros, or $285, that feature the slogans. A themed window display will also be unveiled on May 17.
With 5,000 copies printed, the limited-edition book is priced at $75 and will be sold at colette.fr.
“I’ve been making magazines and books for almost 25 years since the first issue of Dazed when I was 18,” Hack told WWD. “It felt like the right time to put all my favorite and most relevant work and ideas into one collection. When I told Rizzoli that I wanted each cover to be unique they told me it would be impossible. That got me thinking to how it could be made. The result is a remarkable result of chance, luck and perseverance made possible by Kodak.”
Dazed will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in October with expansion plans in the works.
“Dazed is launching in China, Korea, Japan and Germany in the next year,” Hack added. “There may be a new print title coming from Dazed Media to balance out the digital growth with a physical release. And finally there will be an education program to promote creativity and diversity in fashion launching end of this year.”
